Telemedicine Benefits for Cardiology Patients
Indiana medical practitioner Dr. Joseph Galdun serves as the medical director of hospital medicine for Fayette Regional Health System. Prior to joining Fayette, Dr. Joseph Galdun worked for 16 years as a cardiology night hospitalist at St. Vincent Medical Group Cardiology, attending to patients in the hospital and providing telemedicine consultations over the phone.
As technological applications for health care become more available, more cardiology patients are accessing this care through telemedicine. This enables patients to successfully monitor their own health and have routine checkups with specialists that otherwise would be impeded by cost or distance.
Not only do such patients have facilitated access to cardiology specialists, many telemedicine technologies are able to collect medical information directly from a patient’s cardiac device, providing real-time data that helps both patients and doctors make informed health decisions.
This has many positive results for patient outcomes. One study demonstrated that using telemedicine can cut a heart patient’s risk of death by a third and reduce hospitalizations by one-fifth.
